A 21-year-old woman was pushed to the ground as a man tried to grab her handbag on a Dereham footpath.
The woman was walking from Moorgate towards on Middlemarch Road at about 8.15am on New Year's Day when the man approached her near the rugby field.
He told her to give her the handbag and tried to grab it.
Police said she was pushed to the ground but managed to keep hold of the bag and she ran to safety towards Middlemarch Road.
She was shaken but not hurt.
The man - described as 5ft7-5ft8 with dark hair - made off in the opposite direction.
