A 78-year-old woman from Mildenhall was fighting for her life in hospital on Saturday after being seriously hurt in a freak accident at a Suffolk hospital.

Alma Cole, who lives in Emmanuel Close, had visited the West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds, for two follow-up appointments following treatment for breast cancer.

She was hurt in a car crash within the grounds of the hospital at around 10.20am on Friday, November 24.

She was about to go home when she was involved in the incident and suffered potentially life-threatening injuries and is currently being treated at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge.

On Saturday night, police were unable to provide any updates on her condition.

The injuries she sustained included broken hips, broken bones in her leg, a collapsed lung, a fractured spine, trauma to the head. She is currently in a coma, said her daughter Lindy.

Medics and members of the public rushed to her aid as she was pinned underneath a car which had to be lifted off of her.

'She is in a bad way and is fighting for her life,' said her daughter, who also lives in Mildenhall. 'She was resuscitated at the scene of the incident before being taken off to Addenbrooke's.'

On Friday afternoon, a West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust spokeswoman said: 'At 10.20am this morning, we received reports of a suspected road traffic collision on the West Suffolk Hospital site.

'One person was sadly very seriously injured.

'After extensive care from our emergency team, the patient was conveyed to Addenbrooke's Hospital for further treatment.

'Patients who need to access the hospital today are still able to do so; you will be directed where you need to go when you arrive on site, but we appreciate your patience as we support the police regarding this incident.'

Police were alerted to the incident by the ambulance service.
