RICHARD PARR

A 33-year-old man was the victim of a “nasty” assault early on New Year's day which left him lying unconscious in the centre of Fakenham.

Police and an ambulance were called to Norwich Street at 1.50am on January 1 and found the man, from the Fakenham area, lying unconscious bleeding from the back of his head.

The victim was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at King's Lynn where he received treatment for a cut to his right eye and a laceration to the rear of his head.

His injuries are not life threatening but it is expected he will remain under observation in hospital for a few days.

It is understood a group of four people were walking along Norwich Street having attended New Year's Eve celebrations.

They were outside the Lloyds TSB premises when they were approached by a fifth man and the assault happened.

Police said it was a “nasty” assault and the victim struck the back of his head on the pavement.

A 25-year-old local man has been arrested and interviewed on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

He has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Anyone who witnessed the assault or has any information about the incident is asked to contact Det Con Rob Devlin at North Walsham police station on 0845 4564567.
