Volunteers needed to help run the facility

A new information centre in Wisbech is set to open on Tuesday and will provide a facility for tourists, events information and facilities.

The new centre, at Post Office Lane, is the result of the Wisbech Area Regeneration and Development Trust and Wisbech Town Council working together.

But volunteers are needed to help run the centre as there are no funds available for staff.

The team behind the venture is hoping knowledgeable volunteers with an interest in the local area would be prepared to join the six who have already come forward.

Wisbech Mayor Vivien McCrae will be opening the office at 1pm.

'We feel that there is a need to provide a personal service and warm welcome to Wisbech that is so important to visitors and at the same time provide information to local residents who are not adept at using the internet. As Fenland District Council is unable to continue to provide this service we felt we needed to take action ourselves. Tourism is crucial to the vitality of Wisbech and the local economy,' said David Oliver, chairman of the Trust and leader of the town council.

Wisbech-based charities, the Alan Hudson Trust and the Robert Hall Trust have made substantial grants towards the refurbishment and the setting-up costs of the new centre.

Local organisations and businesses are welcome to call in with updates about events or new facilities and services.
