Wild West will be the theme for Downham Market carnival parade

The theme for this year's parade through Downham Market, which is part of the town's annual festival, has been announced.

Organisers have said the theme for the parade, which goes from Heygates Mill to the Howdale, will be Downham goes Wild in the West.

The colourful parade has been entertaining spectators for 36 years and kicks off eight days of entertainment in the town with a carnival, gigs and exhibitions taking place.

Last year's parade was heralded as one of the longest ever seen, with two squadrons of Minis, vintage cars and tractors taking part. Organisers hope that this year's parade will be even better.

However, the town's Deputy Mayor Val Starling said the festival committee needs more people to volunteer for marshalling duties.

She said: 'Putting on events for the public, especially outside events, require lots of bodies for preparation and marshalling duties.

'There is now a change in procedure for the closing of roads, which means we have to arrange the manpower and barriers for this to be carried out and we need more volunteers.'
