Mystery last night surrounded the sudden resignation of a Norfolk Conservative chairman.

David Costin, chair of North West Norfolk Conservative Association, confirmed at lunchtime he had resigned.

He stood down after the EDP received an anonymous letter saying he had been forced to do so.

Mr Costin refused to be drawn on the reason for his resignation when contacted yesterday.

“It is a purely internal matter which is of no public interest,” he said. “North West Norfolk Conservative Association and Henry Bellingham shall continue to have my unstinting support.”

One senior Conservative Party source yesterday described the decision as "unfortunate".

“I'm sorry to hear he has resigned,” he said. “There is not too much I can say but I believe the decision is based on divisions within the association and differences of opinion.

“Mr Costin did a lot of work for the party and was well respected by many members within the organisation.”
