A west Norfolk radio station is hoping to put smiles back on the faces of hundreds of children this Christmas, when they each receive a gift donated through an annual appeal.

KLFM’s Christmas Toy Appeal has collected about 2,500 toys in the last two years, with 1,750 gifts just last year, and people can donate items at various locations next week.

Community organisations including the King’s Lynn Ladies’ Circle and King’s Lynn 17th Girl Guides have also volunteered their time to wrap each Christmas gift. The toys will then be delivered to families in west Norfolk, Wisbech and Fakenham facing tough times over the festive season.

Simon Rowe, KLFM breakfast show presenter, said: “Each year we go to 10 different supermarkets over two weeks, and then take the gifts to the children before Christmas. Last year the toys collected were worth about £20,000.

“We don’t just deliver to children at hospitals. We go to children in foster care, children’s centres, and Scotty’s Little Soldiers, among others.

“It’s an amazing thing to see the smiles on the kids’ faces when they receive the toys. For some of these families at Christmas, it’s a toss-up between roast potatoes for lunch or a Matchbox car for the kids. It helps to put a smile on their faces.”

Next week KLFM will be collecting on Monday, December 5, 11am-1pm, Tesco Extra - Hardwick, King’s Lynn: Tuesday, December 6, 11am-1pm - Youngsters World, King’s Lynn: Wednesday, December 7, 11am-1pm - Tesco, Gaywood: Thursday, December 8, 11am-1pm - Morrisons, Fakenham and Friday, December 9, 11am-1pm - Morrisons, Wisbech. Drop-off points are at Nat West, Tuesday Market Place, King’s Lynn and Swinton Insurance, Railway Road, King’s Lynn. And Sainsbury’s in Westgate, Hunstanton is collecting for the appeal.
