It was won, for the second year running, by the Wellington pub team, who beat the Foundry Arms at Northrepps into second place after 90 minutes of straining muscles in hot weather conditions last Sunday.

Third place went to When in Rome – a team of locals from Cromer, Sheringham and North Walsham – who beat RNLI Cromer in the semi final.

Captain of the 'Welly' team, Liam Wade, said: 'It's great to be the undefeated champions for the second year in a row. We faced stiff competition in the first pull against a sprightly team and the final pull against The Foundry was our best performance of the day'.

They now go on represent the town in a friendly tug of war competition between Cromer and Sheringham carnivals.

The first leg will take place on August 7 during Sheringham Carnival and the return leg is Cromer on August 21.

Next in the carnival calendar is the first of two children's weeks running from August 4-15 with more than 20 events including sand sculpture, crab catching, paint a crab shell and a tide fight.

This year will also see the return of the Duck Race off the pier on Friday August 15. The winner will be the first duck to reach breakwaters east of the pier. Ducks will be available to buy on the morning of the event.

Later that day children's weeks will be rounded off with a picnic and party on the pier.

Children's weeks activities are open to age groups 5 years and under, 6 years to 9 years and 10 years to 13 years. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

The main carnival, now in its 54th year, has more than 120 events between August 16 and 22.

Organisers are keen to hear from anyone interested in helping to marshal the carnival parade. If you have some time to spare please contact Pat on 07766 430166.

The full programme of events is now available from shops and businesses across Cromer as well as online at www.cromercarnival.co.uk
