A well-known doctor who came from a family of doctors has died.

Dr Maurice Connell died at the age of 92 at Ritson Lodge Nursing Home, Hopton.

He followed in his father's footsteps and became a doctor, along with his two brothers.

His wife was also a doctor and their son also joined in the family tradition of entering into general practice.

Dr Connell was born at 25 South Quay, Great Yarmouth on in May 1924. He was the son of Dr Ernest Connell who had his own General Practice at the family home.

Doctor Maurice was one of five children and all three sons followed in their father's footsteps and became doctors.

Maurice qualified at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin and then worked at Keighly Victoria Hospital in Yorkshire where he met and married a fellow doctor, Dr Elizabeth Smith.

Together they had their own practice in Castleford, Yorkshire for several years before eventually moving back to Yarmouth to join the Connell family practice along with Maurice's younger brother Mervyn.

With so many Doctor Connell's in one practice they became known as Dr Maurice, Dr Elizabeth and Dr Mervyn.

Maurice and Elizabeth had four children, and their son Paul later followed in the family tradition and also became a GP and joined the family practice.

The family later opened a branch surgery at Maurice's house Gablehurst, in Long Lane, Bradwell which later moved over the road.

Maurice also worked as the Great Yarmouth Police Surgeon as well as his duties as a GP.

His wife Elizabeth died suddenly when she was 59 and Maurice later remarried Ethel whom Maurice also outlived.

After his retirement, Dr Maurice enjoyed art, music and antiques and also loved nothing more than walking his dogs, especially on the beach at Gorleston.

He is survived by four children, ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family said he will be sadly missed by all of his family, friends and former colleagues.

His funeral service and burial will be held at St Nicholas Parish Church, Bradwell in Church Walk on Tuesday, February 14 at noon.
