When Daniel Western saw an elderly gentleman struggling and alone in the snow this morning he leapt into action.

The 38-year-old approached Charles Alger in Great Yarmouth town centre after spotting him looking lost and bewildered.

Mr Alger, 91, was making his annual trip to this newspaper’s office to place an in memoriam message for his wife Doris, without realising it had moved.

Taking charge of the situation Mr Western, who lives in Gorleston, warmed him up in his car before offering his steadying arm and accompanying him to the office in King Street.

He then insisted on waiting and giving him a lift home.

Mr Western, who has a bone disease and walks with a stick, said: “I just saw he was having a bit of a struggle and asked if he wanted help. We sat in the car for a little while and I made some enquiries on the phone about where he needed to go.

“I wouldn’t have felt right leaving him there. If I can help someone I will. What goes around comes around.”

Mr Alger said he was grateful for the help, adding that Mr Western, a perfect stranger, had also given him his number in case he needed further assistance.
