The lowest temperature recorded in East Anglia last night was the coldest in September since 2003.

Those in the village of Santon Downham on the Norfolk/Suffolk border had a chilly evening with overnight temperatures dipping to -1.1C.

There was, however, a wide range in temperatures across East Anglia last night as the people of Cromer experienced a far less frosty 7.9C - the highest overnight temperature of the region.

Norwich-based forecaster Weatherquest explained the reason for these wide ranging temperatures is that light winds and clear skies inland can mean heat from the ground is lost rapidly.

Coastal areas such as Cromer, in contrast, benefit from their close proximity to the sea which is still the warmest it will be all year with water temperatures remaining up to 16C.

Weatherquest said: 'The lowest temperature in the region last night is probably the coldest we'll get for a while now. The temperatures coming in over the coming nights will be closer to average for this time of year.'
