Waveney Wolves under-12s have huffed and puffed their way to national glory, following an invincible season that saw them win all 18 of their fixtures.

The team, which only formed two years ago, defied the odds to defeat London Warriors in the national finals, having dominated in the league and overcoming Leicester Huntsmen in the semi-final.

Based at Barnards Meadow, the team takes on youngsters from the age of three upwards, across three age groups.

John Sherwood, Wolves head coach, said: 'Physically, we should not really have stood a chance in the final. Our opponents were bigger than us, stronger and faster, so it really was a massive achievement to win.

'We try to teach our boys how to understand and play the game, we have a philosophy which we call ELF - effort, learning and fun. I think this philosophy really helps us.'

While other American football teams rely on coaches to offer set out instructions during the game, Mr Sherwood said his players set out their own strategies once they are on the field.

He said: 'The boys call their own plays during their huddles and I think because they learn to understand the game, they are better at reacting to different situations. We try and encourage them to express themselves in their play.'

As well as bringing home the national championship, the dominant Wolves also won a separate, four game tournament, in Leicester without conceding a single point.

Mr Sherwood added: 'Everyone enjoys offensive play - scoring points - but we concentrate just as much on defence, which is a big part of our success. We finished the season as highest scorers, but also with the least points conceded.'

Club manager Nigel Hadley, added: 'This was such a brilliant achievement for the boys and the coaches. We try and teach the boys to work hard for each other and have trust and respect in one another, which they do.'
