Volunteers are being sought to help record wildlife they spot in churchyards and wildlife sites.

The Wayland Partnership will launch its Growing Together Project to support Norfolk Wildlife's County Wildlife Action Project to help keep track of the number and types of species in the area.

People will be needed to help to monitor one of the 14 Wayland churches which have signed up to the project between April and the end of August.

Gemma Walker, project officer with Norfolk Wildlife Trust, said: 'Volunteers will survey the churchyard once a month and we can see which part of the churchyard is most important for wild flowers and help the churches to manage them.

'It is important that we work closely with the church and congregation so they know what we are doing.

'Churchyards can be a really important refuge for wild flowers.

'And it is about getting people to know their local patch. By getting people to adopt a church yard to survey, they get to see more plants we can.'

The Norfolk Wildlife Trust Breckland group will be holding a talk by Ms Walker about the project and a training session will also be held before people are than asked to start their flower recording.

Pam Morgan, from the Wayland Trust, said: 'If you think about our community, perhaps the only place that hasn't been disturbed is a churchyard.

'The churches will block off a little area so they don't mow so things will grow over the season and we can get a picture of what is growing in the grounds.'

This will be the second year of Norfolk Wildlife Trust's County Wildlife Action project, with 76 sites surveyed last year.

This year it is hoped 50 churchyards and 50 wildlife sites will be surveyed.

The talk to find out more information will take place on Wednesday, March 15 from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at Watton Christian Community Centre.

A training day for volunteers will be held on Saturday, April 8 at Wayland House in Watton from 10am to 1pm.

People must register to join, to do that or for more information email Gemma on gemmaw@norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk or call 01603 625540.
