UPDATED: Heinz factory fire, Westwick, now out

One fire engine from Sprowston remained at the scene this afternoon of the Heinz Frozen and Chilled Foods factory blaze, near North Walsham, which broke out yesterday teatime.

A fire service spokesman said the fire, in an industrial fat fryer, had been extinguished but firefighters were keeping a 'watching brief' in case of further trouble.

The factory, on Station Road, Westwick, remains closed and an investigation into the fire is underway.

At its height last night 90 firefighters were at the scene and black smoke was billowing across neighbouring homes and countryside.

The factory, which produces Aunt Bessie's frozen potato products, employs about 200 people. A shift of between 50 and 60 were working on the site when the blaze broke out but the site was safely evacuated and no-one was injured.
