The United States government has responded to the tragic death of Lord Ballyedmond in a helicopter crash at Gillingham on the Suffolk/Norfolk border last night.

Edward Haughey, Lord Ballyedmond, was the wealthiest man in Northern Ireland and the head of global pharmaceutical company Norbrook Laboratories, which has offices in the United States.

The USA's Belfast consulate issued a statement on behalf of the government. It said: 'The United States was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Lord Ballyedmond and others as a result of a helicopter accident in Norfolk, England.

'Lord Ballyedmond played a profoundly significant role in politics and commerce across the island of Ireland, Great Britain, and beyond. Through his stewardship and dedication to excellence, Norbrook become a global force in veterinary pharmaceutical research and manufacturing.

'His achievements brought significant employment to Northern Ireland and in other places around the world, while his philanthropic endeavors helped improve the quality of life of countless others.

'Our thoughts and condolences are with all the families of those bereaved.'
