A man died after being hit by a train in Littleport this afternoon (Tuesday).

Emergency services including the British Transport Police and East of England Ambulance Service were called to the Sandhill level crossing after reports that the man had been hit, at about 1.30pm.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: 'We were called to the line close to the Sandhill crossing in Victoria Street, Littleport, at 1.30pm, following a report that a person had been hit by a train.

'Colleagues from Cambridgeshire Constabulary and East of England Ambulance Service also attended, and a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

'The incident is not being treated as suspicious, and our officers are now working to identify the man and inform his family.

'The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has been informed. A file will be prepared for the coroner.'

The line was closed by Network Rail for more than two hours but reopened again by 4pm.

Unconfirmed reports said the casualty was an elderly man.
