A man who died after being hit by a car last night (Monday) has been identified as an airman stationed at RAF Lakenheath.

A blue Rover was involved in a crash with the man outside the main gate of RAF Mildenhall on the A1101, just before 11pm.

The man, who was in his 20s, died at the scene.

Colonel Bill Lewis, 48th Fighter Wing vice commander at RAF Lakenheath, said: 'The Liberty Wing suffered a tragic loss last night. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the Liberty Airman killed in yesterday's accident.'

The car was being driven by an airman from the 352nd Special Operations Group, RAF Mildenhall.

The name of the deceased has been withheld until his next of kin have been informed.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by the Suffolk Constabulary.
