UPDATE: Mystery liquid spilled on A47 near Swaffham after van crash declared “99pc water”

Firefighters are dealing with the leak of an unknown liquid after a van crashed into a roundabout on the A47 near Swaffham.

A mystery liquid that caused traffic chaos on the A47 after a van hit a roundabout has been declared non-hazardous.

The closures of one west-bound lane and the turn off to the A1122 are expected to be lifted shortly after a hazard officer said the liquid was 99pc water.

A specialist chemical hazard team was summoned from Essex because the driver of the van disappeared, leaving the emergency services unable to identify the substance.

The accident, at the Downham roundabout, happened at 8.27am when a white van carrying large plastic containers of liquid hit a bollard at the roundabout.

Police confirmed they are still trying to locate the driver.

An ambulance was called, but left when it became apparent there were no casualties at the scene.
