A Lowestoft man has been remanded into custody by magistrates after he appeared in court yesterday charged in connection with a burglary earlier this week in which two women suffered serious injuries.

Alan Harwood, 30, of the High Street, appeared at Great Yarmouth Magistrates' Court charged with two counts of GBH, one count of aggravated burglary and one count of producing cannabis.

The four alleged offences relate to a burglary at a house in Cambridge Road, Lowestoft, in the early hours of Monday in which a mother and daughter suffered serious injuries.

Harwood, who was arrested by police on Tuesday after officers executed two warrants in the town, was remanded into custody by magistrates until September 11 for a hearing at Ipswich Crown Court.

A 47-year-old woman who suffered head injuries in Monday's incident is in a critical but stable condition at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge.

Her injuries had been described as life-threatening by police and included a fractured skull.

The woman's daughter suffered a gash to her head and a broken arm and she had been treated at the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston, where her mother had originally been taken.

The pair were taken to hospital after police were called to Cambridge Road at about 2.40am on Monday after shouting was heard from inside.

Cash, jewellery and a handbag were stolen during the burglary.

As well as Harwood, police arrested a 36-year-old Lowestoft man on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary on Monday.

The man has been released on police bail until October 25, pending further police enquiries.
