Officials have started an investigation after a 14-year-old girl suffered a serious head injury after a goal post fell on her.

A land ambulance was called to the playing field at Pages Lane, Saham Toney, near Watton, at about 2.50pm on Saturday and then the East Anglian Air Ambulance was scrambled to the scene at 3.20pm.

A doctor and paramedic from the air ambulance crew worked with the land ambulance team to monitor the girl and immobilise her spine.

She was then flown to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital with a parent, arriving at 4pm.

Her condition was described as serious.

The playing field is the home of Saham Toney’s football and cricket clubs.

Neither of the club’s football teams were at home on Saturday and it appears the area was quiet when the accident happened.

It is believed the girl was injured by one of the five-a-side training goals.

A Breckland Council spokesman confirmed the accident was being investigated.

Police did not attend incident and no further information has been released by the ambulance service.
