Norfolk and Waveney's GP surgeries will remain open despite today's strike action by doctors, the region's primary care trust has said.

David Kerry, head of emergency planning for NHS Norfolk and Waveney, said: 'The indication is that all GP practices in Norfolk and Waveney will be open for their normal surgery hours and will be providing healthcare services for patients today (Thursday).

'We have sought responses from 117 main GP practices. We are actively seeking responses from the 20 practices who have not responded so far.

'Ninety-seven practices have responded and we know 67 practices are taking no action at all with 30 modifying some services, but this ranges from virtually no impact to a handful offering urgent and emergency appointments only.

'Only a small number of routine appointments and administration will be affected.'

There has also been minimal impact at the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston.

Kirk Lower, director of workforce and organisational development, said: 'As anticipated, the BMA industrial action has had minimal impact on services at the James Paget University Hospitals.

'No surgery has been cancelled, but three clinics have been rescheduled as a result of the action. The patients affected have been notified and offered alternative appointments.'
