More than 1500 homes in south Lowestoft were left without power last night due to a fault on an underground cable.

The problem was first reported at 6.35pm yesterday evening (Tuesday).

A UK Power Networks spokesman confirmed that '1502 properties were affected' and that 'engineers worked as quickly and as safely as possible to restore power supplies to 974 properties by 6.39pm.

'Another 40 had their supplies restored at 8.42pm and 185 properties were back on supply at 11.21pm. The final 303 properties had their electricity supplies restored at 12.33am.

'We understand how difficult it is to be without power and apologise for any inconvenience caused by this incident', the spokesman added.

There were reports of slow moving traffic near the Bascule Bridge after the traffic lights stopped working and some street lights went out in London Road South and on roads in Pakefield.

Other residents in north Lowestoft reported that their lights were flickering but they did not experience a full power cut.
