The woman who died on the A47 was driving the wrong way along a dual carriageway on the A47 near Peterborough City Hospital this morning.

A police spokesman said: 'Sadly we have had to confirm another fatality today.

'An elderly woman driving a red Daihatsu Charade the wrong way along the A47 died at the scene after she collided head-on with silver Honda Jazz.'

The driver of the Jazz, a woman in her 40s, also from the Peterborough area, suffered serious but not life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.

The collision happened at around 11am and prompted an emergency message from police who urged motorists to steer clear of the area after the A47 was closed to drivers in both directions.

Police, fire crew and ambulance crews were on site within minutes and saw long tailbacks as they worked to clear the site.

It was also confirmed an elderly woman motorist was killed in a collision with a bus in Haddenham near Ely at around the same time.

Police confirmed the woman died following a collision in Wilburton Road, Haddenham, just after 11am.

A bus and the car collided at the junction with Twenty Pence Road and the car motorist, an elderly woman, died at the scene.

There were five people on the bus, including the driver, and all except one were uninjured. One woman was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Officers would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either of the vehicles in the moments leading up to the collision.

The A1123 remained closed for some hours and police issued warnings to stay away from the area.
