Donald Trump's ascension to the presidency is set to have far-reaching implications for the thousands of US service people living in the region.

Both RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk have significant numbers of US Air Force personnel, many of whom also have brought their families to live in our region.

The result may mean Trump will even visit East Anglia, as Lakenheath and Mildenhall are often on the itineraries of visiting US leaders and dignitaries. On a visit in 2012, first lady Michelle Obama greeted US military families at Mildenhall.

This newspaper has contacted both bases for comment on the election result, however staff there are restricted on what they can say on political matters.

A spokesman from RAF Lakenheath said: 'As members of an apolitical military, we don't comment on a particular candidate's election.

'It's important to remember that we have one commander-in-chief and that we remain focused and responsive to the existing National Command Authority. 'When that authority transfers on January 20, 2017, we look forward to serving the president-elect with the same professionalism and competence, as we have done with each new president for well over 200 years.'
