Tributes have been paid to one of the men behind the colourful Norwich Pride festival, which celebrated its sixth annual event in the city last year.

Dean Simons, who lived in Hollis Lane, was the chairman of Norwich Pride, and died on the weekend, aged 51.

He became chairman in 2013 after working as the access steward for the organisation.

Norwich Pride announced the sad news of Mr Simons' death on its Facebook page on Sunday afternoon.

Since then, Mr Simons' photograph has been shared 50 times and more than 100 people have written messages on his and Norwich Pride's facebook wall.

Norwich Pride wrote: 'We are devastated to announce the death of our gorgeous chairperson Dean M Simons. 'Dean was a much loved member of the local LGBT community and a passionate supporter of Norwich Pride.

'He pioneered our work in ensuring that the celebrations were as accessible as possible and was a very proud chairman of Norwich Pride 2014.

'He was a fun-loving person who adored having a good time. He had a wonderful smile. Our sympathies go out to Dean's family and friends. Dean, you were amazing - we will never forget you.'

Steven Thornton, his best friend, said: 'He is my best friend and I miss him so much, words cannot describe how I feel losing him. My heart goes out to his family.'

Mr Simons' sister Tracy Hinscliff said: 'Thank you all for the beautiful messages about my brother; it is so lovely reading them at this very sad time.'

Julie Bremner, vice-chairman of Norwich Pride, added that they would remember 'his fabulous smile and his contribution to Norwich Pride'.

Norwich Pride is a celebration from the LGBT community for everyone. Its mission is to ensure that Norwich is a city where everyone can feel safe and proud to be themselves. The celebration is organised by a collective of volunteers.
