Snow has brought road chaos and school closures to the Thetford area.

There has been about three inches of snow in the Elveden area - one inch which fell yesterday and another two overnight.

As a result, crashes on the A11 are causing problems for commuters. A woman was hospitalised following a six vehicle pile up on the A11 at Larling.

The East of England Ambulance Service was called just after 8am. There were three casualties, the most serious of whom was a woman in her 20s who had a head injury.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: 'The woman sustained only minor injuries and was conveyed to West Suffolk General Hospital. Two other casualties were assessed and treated at the roadside.

'So far this morning we've been called about five other incidents on the roads where no casualties have required hospital treatment. 'We suspect that the weather will get very cold overnight and motorists should check the roads before they travel and make sure their car has the appropriate kit such as de-icer, blankets and a flask to keep warm.'

Meanwhile, the Thetford bypass was also blocked near the Sainsbury's roundabout due to a broken down vehicle. Both incidents have now cleared.

Elsewhere, a car hit the central reservation at Mundford, between the Mundford and Brandon Road roundabouts, at about 8.20am.

It spun round and ended up facing the wrong way in the fast lane. Police said the road was partially blocked, southbound, heading towards London.

And at 7.50am there was a single-vehicle crash on the A11 at Snetterton. The road is now clear.

Public transport has also been affected by the adverse conditions. Coach Services currently has a delay of 15 minutes on the 84 and 86 out of Brandon and Thetford towards Bury St Edmunds.

And there are delays of up to 20 minutes on trains running through Thetford from Norwich to Ely due to a problem at a level crossing is causing disruption between Spooner Row and Eccles Road.

Meanwhile, some youngsters across the area are celebrating after their school closed due to bad weather.

Schools which are closed today include Weeting Primary School, Queensway Infant School and Nursery in Thetford, Hockwold and Methwold Community School, Iceni Academy, Duchy of Lancaster in Methwold and Diamond Academy in Thetford.

No schools across the Suffolk border are closed.

Weather forecasters have predicted some wintry showers this afternoon and temperatures are set to stay low.

No schools in the Watton and Swaffham area were closed, and Breckland District Council said they have gritted all their car parks.
