Highways bosses are to investigate adding an extra lane in a city one-way street to stop cyclists breaking the law.

Cycling projects in Norwich are expected to receive around 75,000 in 2013/14, including the improvement of signs on the city council's inner ring road bike route.

It will also fund a study examining if a contraflow lane can be added in Magdalen Street, between Magpie Road and Edward Street, to allow pushbikes to head in both directions.

Similar work will also be carried out for Thorpe Road, between Carrow Road and Clarence Road.

A Labour survey earlier this year in Magdalen Street recorded 33 cyclists as using the pavement, with another 21 going doing the wrong way the street in little more than an hour.

Julie Brociek-Coulton, Sewell city councillor, said this research was intended to provide evidence that changes are needed to help cyclists.

She said: 'It's not that we are trying to get cyclists named and shamed.

'We are trying to do it so we can get a safer way into the city centre for cyclists and pedestrians.

'It's very dangerous going on the pathway, mainly for the pedestrians.'

She added many of the cyclists in the area were 'sensible' and got off their bikes to walk.

Jeff Jordan, of the Norwich Cycling Campaign, said it would be wonderful to have a contraflow lane in Magdalen Street for cyclists.

He said: 'It would be a very heavily used road.'
