Improvements to the A47 will be formally announced by the Prime Minister following years of campaigning to improve safety on the road.

Speaking to business leaders later today, David Cameron is expected to reveal the A47 will benefit from part of a £15 billion investment to the country's roads.

Full details are likely to emerge closer to George Osborne's Autumn Statement on December 3, but projects thought to be announced include upgrades to the A47/A11 Thickthorn Roundabout and increased safety measures on the Acle Straight.

Mr Cameron is expected to say: 'Whenever we have been faced with the choice between the past and the future, we have always chosen the future.

'And I can tell you this today, in three weeks' time you will see an Autumn Statement where we choose the future again.

'And all underpinned by over £15 billion worth of investment.'

The news comes amid a rising death toll on the road. Just last month, Amanda Jacobs drowned in a dyke after her car came off the road following a crash on the Acle Straight.

Broadland MP Keith Simpson said while he would love to see his constituency benefit in the government's plans, any improvement to the Norfolk section of the road should be welcomed.

He said: 'Danny Alexander last week talked positively about the A47 and the Prime Minister is going to talk, maybe not in great detail, about strategic roads and that's what the A47 is.

'I think this has got to be good news and I have always said I would love to see improvements.

'We have a big comminity here in Norfolk and I just want something to be started, a commitment to the people of Norfolk.

'In my own patch there have been many promises. I would love improvements there, but if it's to the west Norwich or in Kings Lynn I would be delighted.

'Once we start, the momentum will be there, it's a commitment.'
