A village pub – that has recently been refurbished – had a narrow escape today after a tractor overturned with a trailer full of potatoes and came to a halt propped up against the outside wall.

The incident happened at around 1pm and near the Five Bells at Upwell after the tractor shed its load on the nearby bridge.

Pub staff said the driver escaped injury and they took ice cold water to police officers at the scene.

'The mess got cleared up very quickly,' said one member of staff.

And the overturned trailer gave an unusual boost to lunchtime trade.

'It improved business since dozens of people came out to look and quite a number of them came into the pub for a drink afterwards,' he said.

The tractor and trailer combination belong to local farmer Fred Hartley Estates whose potato season is in full flow.

A Norfolk Police spokesman said: 'We were called at 12.56pm to reports of a tractor trailer overturned.

'The road was reopened at 2.08pm.'

The farm currently has over 400 acres given over to potatoes with varieties including Maris Piper, Markies, Sigitta, Melody, Jelly, Ramos and Compass.
