Cheering crowds, thunderous applause, and thousands chanting your name are all things sporting stars are familiar with.

But for the Norfolk man behind one of football's most famous theme tunes, they were an unexpected part of a special appearance at Burnley striker, ex-Norwich City player and now-podcaster Peter Crouch's sell-out O2 event this weekend.

Tony Britten, a composer, film producer and director, penned the Champions League anthem in 1992, and it was first played at the tournament's launch 27 years ago.

And Mr Britten was a guest at 'CrouchFest' at the O2 arena on Saturday, June 15, alongside musician Liam Gallagher and opera singer Katherine Jenkins.

The 64-year-old from Thornage, near Holt, described the experience as " very jolly" if a bit overwhelming.

"A few weeks ago they did a podcast about the Champions League and talked about the music," he said.

"A mutual friend who'd been involved with the recording said he knew me and did they want to have a chat, and they asked me to come along to the end of series live show.

"It started to become a bit of an event - more than I'd anticipated.

"You never know how these things are going to go."

And the podcasters' answer to Coachella saw even saw the musical star perform Mr Britten's UEFA Champions League anthem to the thousands-strong audience.

Co-host of the popular BBC show That Peter Crouch Podcast, Radio One's Chris Stark, surprised hosts Crouch and sports writer Tom Fordyce with the Welsh singer's appearance.

She joined them on stage for a chat before delivering the performance of the track, which met with a great reaction from the crowd.

The composer appeared on stage with a choir and met the other performers backstage.

"I met Liam Gallagher briefly and he was very sweet," he added.

"Of course he went on stage effing and blinding.

"I've never worked with her [Katherine Jenkins] before but she was great and very professional and made sure it was rehearsed properly.

"I thought the crowd wouldn't be very interested in an old classical music composer, but they were very enthusiastic.

"It was all very loud and very jolly."

He added: "Peter Crouch was very interesting and articulate and charming.

"He won't be short of work when he hangs up his boots."

And while Mr Britten admitted he was more of a Crystal Palace fan, he added that Norwich City have "really worked" for their latest promotion to the top flight and said: "They're not going to give up easily.

"It would be marvellous to see them stay up there."
