A class at a Thetford school has raised money to adopt four baby elephants.

Thetford Grammar School English teacher Laura Wingham asked her year-eight form if they wanted to support a charity.

Once it was decided the fund-raising should benefit The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust - an African orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation program - the pupils set out to hold a bake sale.

Mrs Wingham said: 'I came in on Friday morning and the form room was heaving with cakes. Children in the school were saying: 'Keep the change'.'

The class had originally hoped to raise £40 to adopt Mbegu the elephant but raised a total of £160, so was also able to adopt Ndotto, Galla and Malima.

'I am incredibly proud,' added Mrs Wingham. 'It was just really to raise awareness of the importance of elephants. The children can follow the elephants throughout the rest of their lives.'
