Motorists have been queuing at Lynn's Asda petrol station today with traffic spilling out of the South Wootton site and onto the road outside.

One driver said people had appeared to be panic buying and caused problems as pumps began to run out of particular fuels, including diesel.

The company said it was working hard to ensure supplies were maintained.

'In areas where there's an Asda petrol station we're often the first choice for petrol because of our consistently low prices and as a result of the sudden increase in demand some of our pumps are running low,' a spokesman said.

'However we're working flat out behind the scenes to keep petrol in stock and we apologise to any customers who have been unable to fill up.

'The AA say there is no need to change your normal petrol buying routine. There are currently no strike dates planned and there will be seven days notice should there be any industrial action.'

The town's Morrison's store has not run out of any fuel type and does not expect to.

'We have had not outages anywhere and we have very strong supplies and are coping well. There really is no need for people to panic,' said a spokesman.

It has been a busy start to the day at the Total garage at Lynn's Pullover roundabout, but it had supplies of all fuels at 5pm yesterday and a spokesman said they were confident of maintaining levels today.

He said the day had seen queues of customers and some had been panic buying, but the site is usually busy.

'It has been a bit busier today and yesterday though,' he said.

The Jet garage in Gaywood has also reported being busy this morning.

Broomhill Service Station on the edge of Downham Market had run out of diesel yesterday but staff fear their delivery last night will not last until tomorrow.

Worker Shahid Biswas said it has 'very, very busy' today and was equally as busy yesterday.

He added: 'All our pumps are full but the queue is not going down. People are filling their tanks right to the top.'

Moyra Conway, part-owner at the petrol station in Hillington, said: 'We have been a bit busier than normal but there hasn't been anyone queuing to get onto the forecourt.

'We haven't run out of either petrol or diesel yet but we will hopefully be getting a petrol delivery today and more diesel on Monday.

'As long as we don't have people descending on us tonight if other garages have run out of petrol or diesel, then we should be fine.'

Meanwhile at Stainsby's, in Heacham, people are being restricted to 25 each and being told they cannot fill fuel cans.

Lavender Hill service station, also in Heacham, ran out of diesel this morning and queues very quickly formed at the Tesco petrol station in Hunstanton and the petrol station in Burnham Deepdale during the morning rush hour.
