Plans to expand a supermarket could bring up to 75 new jobs to Hunstanton, store bosses said last night.

Tesco says the enlarged store, on the resort's South Beach Road, would be 50pc larger than its current branch.

It says it would contain an opticians, pharmacy, clothing, electrical goods and baby products.

Also included are proposals to add extra pumps to its filling station and use part of a nearby site called the Sheep Field, to replace parking lost by increasing the size of the store on to the current car park. The remainder of the building will be 'modernised and updated', Tesco said in a statement.

Tesco spokesman Louise Gosling said: 'The Hunstanton store is busy and popular and is trading well, particularly in the summer season when increased tourist numbers can make the store feel overcrowded.

'We want to expand the store to create a better shopping experience for our customers all year round. This would also create around 75 new full and part-time jobs for local people.'

William Searle, chairman of Hunstanton Chamber of Trade, said it was in discussion about the plans, which go on show to the public at an exhibition this afternoon.

It is being held at the Town Hall, from 3 7pm today and from 9am-2pm tomorrow.

Members of the project team will be on hand to answer questions and visitors will be encouraged to register their views.

West Norfolk Council said a planning application had not yet been sumitted for the Hunstanton store. Two weeks ago, Tesco applied to increase the size of the new store complex it is building on the former Campbell's Soup factory, on King's Lynn's Hardwick Road.
