Police in Lowestoft are appealing for witnesses following an attempted robbery on a taxi driver on New Year's Day, which resulted in the taxi colliding with a lamppost.

At approximately 2.15am today a taxi driver picked up a fare of two men from near to the Winelodge on Bridge Road, Oulton Broad in his VW Sharan.

The men said they wanted to go to Yarmouth Road.

During the journey the men said they were not going to pay. The taxi driver then turned into Yarmouth Road with the intention of driving to the town's police station.

One of the men put his arm around the driver's neck and demanded money from him - causing the driver to lose control of his car which then collided with a lamppost.

Both men ran from the vehicle along Yarmouth Road, with one turning into Station Road.

One of the men is described as white, with a big build and short shaven hair. He was wearing a blue jumper. The second man was white, about 22 and wore a red and black check shirt and jeans.
