A swimming group is calling to meet with council leaders over controversial changes to a newly redeveloped leisure centre.

The call comes as membership fees will increase and over 50s swimming sessions will be scrapped when Wymondham Leisure Centre fully reopens next month.

The building closed last May after South Norfolk Council said it would pour £3.5m into upgrading its facilities.

But a group representing swimmers at the Wymondham centre has expressed anger at a number of changes.

And they are now calling to meeting with council leader John Fuller to raise some of their concerns.

Douglas Munro, 75, who has been a member since 2001, said: 'It is the manner in which the council has made these changes. They did a very small survey in the beginning about how people felt about things and they went and ignored it all basically.

'At the very least we are going to push very hard for the over 50s sessions to be restored, but we will talk to them about other aspects including prices.

'A lot of older people enjoyed the sessions and came to rely on them as a social thing to get out and meet their friends.'

Improvements made to the leisure centre include revamped changing rooms, a two-storey gym fitted with 100 machines and a new spa area and cafe.

But in a letter to Mr Fuller, the group said it was angered by some of the changes, including plans to increase the annual subscription from £190 to £330.

Users have also complained about the relocation of the sauna and steam room to the other side of the centre - as well as the removal of the jacuzzi being highlighted by them.

Wymondham Leisure Centre is to fully reopen on April 11, creating 17 jobs.

South Norfolk Council says the over 50s sessions were not in line with its inclusive services ethos and the new pricing structure was value for money, necessary to bring all of its three leisure centres into line with the local market and ensured the sites remain sustainable in the long-term.

It added the council was always willing to discuss any issues with leisure centre members.
