Youngsters got an appreciation of where food comes from as they celebrated the harvest at an annual event.

Children from all year groups at Swaffham's Sacred Heart Convent School took part in a harvest festival service at St Peter and St Paul's Church.

The event saw the school's new starters join in with the older pupils as they sang hymns, read prayers and presented baskets of fresh fruit and vegetables which will be raffled off for charity today and tomorrow.

Youngsters who had taken part in a bake-off competition were also presented with their prizes.

Yesterday's service formed part of a weekend of activities for this year's Brecks Food Festival. Elsewhere, shop owners had filled their windows with food, farm and countryside-themed displays as part of the best-dressed window competition, people were able to buy fresh produce from the indoor market and Impsons showcased their butchery skills.

Festivities will continue today with an apple and orchard fun day at the Green Britain Centre and a food festival quiz at the Assembly Rooms.

Sister Francis Ridler, headteacher at Sacred Heart, said: 'We get the children to find out about where the food they eat comes from. It is really important that we support local farmers and businesses.'

The Green Britain Centre apple and orchard fun day will run until 4pm. People will be able to find out more about growing food organically, wildlife gardening, composting and heritage fruit. There will also be free children's apple pie master classes.

The food festival quiz will be held at the Assembly Rooms at 7pm. Organised by Strattons Hotel, there will be tastings and prizes. The event will raise funds for the Neuroblastoma Society.

Tomorrow, there will be an international food day which will be held at the Assembly Rooms.
