Coes in Bevan Street East is launching its biggest sale to date on Thursday with discounts of up to 75% to clear £250,000 of stock.

The store is investing £50,000 in a major refurbishment to its interior and exterior – leading to the need to set up the menswear sale to make more room at the former Old Clapham Arms pub building.

As preparations for the sale, Coes will be closed between 5.30pm tomorrow and 10am on Thursday, when the sale starts.

Coes has traded in Lowestoft for more than 50 years and the company, which has stores in Ipswich, Felixstowe and Maldon, in Essex, and staff are pleased it can invest £50,000 in its store.

Matthew Griggs, manager, pictured, said: 'Having traded in Lowestoft for more than 50 years, we believe the retail businesses in the town are as important to the local community, as the public are to the traders.

'Certainly the support we receive from our customers is appreciated.

'We hope our refurbishment and investment is seen as a positive sign that Lowestoft is an important destination for shopping and the local economy in general.'

It will also be the first time the store has ever been shut within its normal trading pattern. There are more than 500 suits in the sale and more than thousands of casual items.

Brands in the sale include Fred Perry, Barbour, Tommy Hilfilger, Polo Ralph Lauren, Ted Baker, Lacoste and Gant.

The refurbishment will be completed by May, and it will mean more brands will be on sale.

Coes moved into the former pub in March 2005 after spending £1m developing it into a menswear store.
