Four Norfolk students are preparing for an adventure on the other side of the world where they will undertake humanitarian work.

The four students and a teacher from Neatherd High School in Dereham will embark on a trip to Borneo, an island considered the third-largest in the world and the largest in Asia.

The trip, which will take place in summer 2019, has been organised by volunteer travel operator Camps International and will see students, Heather Chant, Michael Dye, Amy Dunton and Louise Tooley engaging in various humanitarian projects.

These include building schools, homes, sanitation blocks and helping to provide clean water. They will also join volunteers from other countries and help to tackle deforestation.

Borneo is home to the oldest rainforest in the world and deforestation, driven largely by illegal logging, has become a major issue on the island and has led to the destruction of almost half of the natural forests. This has also endangered much of the island's wildlife, such as orangutans and elephants.

However, the student will still manage to fit in some time for leisure activities and they aim to finish their stay on the island by learning to scuba dive.

In the run up to the expedition the students must each raise at least 75pc of the funds needed for the trip and they will be participating in a variety of fund raising activities, such as car boot sales and sponsored walks.

One will even conquer their fear of heights by climbing the O2 in June.

Teacher Stewart Anderson, who will be travelling with the pupils said: 'The Borneo expedition is a fantastic way for our pupils to see a part of the world that only very few ever get round to visiting.

'I am already very proud of our pupils who have undertaken lots of charity events to raise funds for the expedition, their efforts will make a big difference to the conservation projects they will be undertaking.

'The planned week of scuba diving will be the cherry on the cake for what is shaping up to be a trip of a life time.'

If you are able to help the students in their fundraising activities, either through group sponsorship, donations towards fetes or have any questions contact the team by e-mail.
