First there were the beatnicks and the teddy boys. Then the mods and rockers, the punks, the goths, the greasers, the hippies and the hipsters. Now perhaps the most bizarre movement of them all is taking off in King's Lynn. Meet the steampunks.
Think Victorian style clothes, with top hats, brass pocket watches and goggles. Picture a steam-powered future that ricochets off the Wild West, where Sci-fi meets upcycling.
It’s like the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - but for ladies, too. Like Selina Lennon, 35, from King’s Lynn.
“I’ve identified as a steampunk for about 12 years, but know I’ve been one a lot longer,” she said. “I was very gothic in high school, wore black and died my hair but I loved Sci-fi too.
“It wasn’t until I visited a friend in Lincoln and stumbled across the steampunk festival I realised I’d been a steampunk all along and didn’t know.”
Finance assistant Mrs Lennon, along with her husband Allan, a 36-year-old product development manager, became regulars at the Asylum Steampunk Festival.
Last year they launched a King’s Lynn Steampunk Society on Facebook, which now has 100 members.
This year, they’re staging their own gathering - the Bazaar Convivial at the Duke’s Head Hotel on the Tuesday Market Place on Saturday, September 15.
“There isn’t really anything steampunk in King’s Lynn,” said Mrs Lennon. “Which is why we are so excited to be bringing our own event to the Duke’s Head.
“We have so much happening. During the day there is a bazaar, a market for businesses that are steampunk-themed.
“There will be clothes, trinkets, even a woman who hand-makes steampunk dolls.”
The daytime event will run from 11am to 4pm and is free to enter. During the evening, a ticketed Evening of Vaudeville will begin at 6.30pm, including a burlesque dancer, musicians and strongman.
Mrs Lennon added: “We are very lucky to have Captain of the Lost Waves performing, as well as Professor Elemental.
“Soluna Dance will be putting on a workshop of Parasol duelling during the day as well as a special 15-minute performance for us in the evening, not to be missed.”
