Trading standards officers will be scouring car boot sales and second-hand shops for dangerous goods during the summer, Suffolk County Council has warned.

Last year, officers seized a number of unsafe electrical items being sold, including electric drills, a portable CD player and a portable television.

And as a result action was taken against 14 traders.

Now, before this year's checks, letters have been sent to traders to remind them of their responsibility to sell safe goods.

Jill Korwin, assistant county trading standards officer, said: "Everyone loves a bargain, but not when it may put them at risk.

"It is important that consumers are aware of what to look out for when buying from second-hand shops and car boot sales to make sure they are not buying dangerous goods."

Ms Korwin also urged customers to take care.

"There are a number of steps consumers can take to safeguard themselves against dangerous goods," she said. "I would urge consumers to follow our advice to avoid buying something which could harm them or their families."

Anyone with concerns about second-hand goods is asked to call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.
