A funeral business has undergone training to enable their workers to better help customers living with dementia.

Arthur Jary and Sons has signed up to the Dementia Action Alliance and staff at each of its six sites, including at Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Caister and Gorleston, have been coached by Age UK.

Among the lessons learnt as part of the training are how to reassure customers, communicate clearly and offer support to someone finding things difficult.

Arthur Jary funeral director Sean Thompson said: 'All our front-line staff – funeral arrangers and directors – have been trained to recognise the signs of dementia and adapt their conversations accordingly. I know from personal experience it can be distressing. When I lost my granddad, my nan would still be walking around trying to find him.

'We see ourselves as part of the caring industry and this will be another string to our bow.'
