A young performer has raised more then £250 for a homeless charity in Norfolk.

13-year-old George Mobbs, from Thorpe St Andrew played his guitar and violin at the Tesco Extra store on Blue Boar Lane in Sprowston on Wednesday, December 20 to raise money for St Martins Housing Trust.

The money raised will go towards building extra beds at the charity's hostel in the city to help them accommodate more rough sleepers.

Mr Mobbs said: 'I remember that while once passing through Norwich city centre on the way back from orchestra rehersals, I saw some homeless people lying in shop doorways. It was a cold and wet night and they looked so sad it made an impression on me.

'I thought then that I ought to do something to help them. With the help from my parents and Shez Bucknole from Tesco, we made the arrangements for my performance.

'I am grateful to both staff and customers at Tesco that helped make this fundraising so successful and I am so happy that this will be of help to the homeless of Norwich. Hopefully one day there will be no more people sleeping on the streets in the city.'

St Martins chief executive, Dr Jan Sheldon accepted the cheque and was delighted to meet George. She said: 'It was lovely to meet a young person who is committed to supporting homeless people.

'Every donation we receive makes a real difference to the lives of the people we work with. Thank you George for your support and for using your musical talent in such a positive way.'

The support from donors like George means that the charity can help more rough sleepers, not only in providing them with a place to stay - but giving the encouragement and assistance they need to move on from their current situation into a more independent life.

Shez Bucknole, community champion for Tesco Norwich Extra, said: 'We are very proud to support such a good cause and having the opportunity of talented George play for our customers. Without the support and generosity of our customers this would not be possible.'
