Today is the spring equinox, otherwise known as the first day of spring. But what else do you need to know about it?
Here are seven facts about the spring equinox:
1. It is also known as the vernal equinox and marks the first day of spring.
2. The equinox is the moment the Sun crosses the equator's path, and from this day forward the day is longer than the night in the northern hemisphere.
3. This pattern will then begin to reverse on June 21, known as the summer solstice.
4. During the equinox, day and night are around the same length.
5. The equinox plays a part in calculating when Christian's celebrate Easter and also when Passover is in the Jewish faith.
6. There is an ancient Chinese belief you can stand an egg on its end on the first day of spring, due to the effect the equinox has on gravity.
7. Many ancient monuments were built to map the movement of the sun - at Stonehenge the sun rises between two stones on the equinox.
