One of the region's top brewers has thrown its weight behind the EDP Norfolk and Lowestoft Flood Appeal after witnessing at firsthand the damage and misery caused by the tidal surge.

As the appeal went further beyond £100,000, Southwold-based Adnams pledged its support and launched a three-pronged approach to raise money to help those trying to rebuild their lives after the devastating tidal surge.

The company has leapt into fund-raising action as it knows only too well how the tidal surge affected communities and businesses as two of its pubs were badly affected by rising floodwater and staff could all too clearly see the damage caused in the region.

As part of its three-pronged appeal boost on Thursday the Adnams Cellar and Kitchen Stores will be collecting money for the appeal by allowing customers paying with bank or credit cards to round up their payments to make a donation.

Then on Friday, Adnams will be boosting our appeal during a fund-raising hour.

From 1pm Adnams will donate £1 from every main meal served at Southwold's The Crown and The Swan Hotels, and the town's Cellar and Kitchen Store Café.

The third fund-raising approach by the company is called the Boxing Day Champagne Campaign.

For every bottle of Adnams Champagne brut or rosé sold on Boxing Day online, in the Adnams Norwich Chapelfield store and the Cellar and Kitchen Store in Southwold, the brewer will donate £2.50 to the flood appeal.

Andy Wood, chief executive of Adnams, said: 'Adnams is extremely proud to support the EDP flood appeal. The East Anglian coast is home to our business, many of our pubs and it's also home to many of our employees and customers.

'We are incredibly lucky to live and work in such a beautiful place, but at times we receive a harsh reminder of just how vulnerable our coastline is.

'With climate change high on the agenda, Adnams has been working to reduce its impact on the environment for many years.

'With an increasing frequency of these catastrophic events such as the recent floods, it has reminded us just how important these measures are. We are encouraging people to get involved and support the Flood Appeal and help raise a terrific amount of money to support those who have suffered recently.'

A spokesman for Adnams said: 'Adnams brewery is situated just a few metres from the coastline here in Southwold, so we're always mindful of the potentially devastating effect of the sea on our coastal communities.

'Two of our pubs, The Harbour Inn in Southwold and The Crown Inn at Snape, were badly affected by rising flood waters, and hundreds of homes and businesses have been overwhelmed, and in some cases destroyed, in a matter of hours.

'The EDP has already raised a staggering £100,000 in its Flood Appeal, which directs critical funds to help flood-stricken communities in Norfolk and north Suffolk.'

Separately, the landlords of the The King's Head Adnams pub at Laxfield, Bob and Linda Wilson, have pledged to donate £100 to the fund. And Norfolk agricultural charity the Clan Trust, founded by the late Rob Alston, has made a £2,000 donation to the appeal.
