A detective superintendent-turned-chimney sweep has become the latest businessman to throw his support behind a fundraising appeal for specialist care equipment for the elderly and frail.

Stuart Dark, 50, who runs Aflame Ltd in Snettisham, hopes to raise hundreds of pounds for the ExCel Appeal, launched by Queen Elizabeth Hospital King's Lynn and the EDP.

He has pledged to donate 10pc of the takings from every chimmney he sweeps in December, and 10pc of the takings of every chimney he sweeps when the appointment was booked in December.

The ExCel Appeal aims to raise £50,000 to buy dementia software, specialist chairs, and falls prevention kit.

'It's a really important fundraising campaign and it resonates with me,' Mr Dark said.

'I sweep for a lot of people who are elderly and there are thousands of elderly people living in the King's Lynn area.

'Becoming elderly and frail is something which will happen to all of us.

'There are plenty of charities looking after children or people with cancer for example, but I think the elderly, who sometimes need help the most, can feel a little brushed away and forgotten about.'

Prior to becoming a sweep Mr Dark spent around 30 years working with the Metropolitan Police in London.

During his time with the police he became a detective superintendent who investigated organised crime.

After retiring from the service he trained as a chimney sweep, before moving to Norfolk to start his business.
