A wannabe robber picked on the wrong woman when he tried to steal a personal CD player off her - receiving a slap in the face for his troubles that floored him.

The woman in her 30s, a student nurse, was walking along Vinces Road in Diss on Easter Sunday when the mugger put his hand over her shoulder and grabbed hold of her headphones.

Police today said that he demanded “in a forceful and aggressive manner” that she hand over her CD player.

But when he tried to pull the item from her she hit him across the face, knocking him over. She then ran away.

The mugger is white, about 6ft, slim to stocky with short brown hair. He wore a blue baseball cap back to front, a white T-shirt, a blue denim jacket and jeans, and was carrying a black holdall over his shoulder.

He was also wearing a belt-buckle ring on the little finger of his left hand and had a bunch of keys hanging from his trouser waistband.

PC Jeremy Briggs said: “Clearly this is an unusual incident for Diss. Fortunately in this instance the offender was left empty-handed and the victim was not injured but she did manage to get a very good description of her would-be attacker.

“It is likely he would have been sporting some kind of injury on the left side his face where he was slapped and I'm keen to trace anyone who may have seen him either in the Vinces Road area on Easter Sunday or who may have seen a man with reddening on his face in the Diss area in the last few days.”
