About 100 voices are needed for the spectacle Ideas of Flight which will be performed at Norwich Cathedral on May 11, and the festival's artistic director William Galinsky is among the people to have already signed up to take part.

Ideas of Flight is being created by The Voice Project, which at last year's Norfolk and Norwich Festival was behind the Singing the City event which took people on a musical mystery tour around Norwich.

This time around, the new choral song-cycle is inspired by poetry about birds in flight, with the words of poets such as Andrew Motion, Wendy Cope, Ruth Padel and Don Paterson, set to music by composers Barbara Thompson, Orlando Gough, Karen Wimhurst and Jon Baker.

Jonathan Baker, the co-director of the project along with Sian Croose, said: 'The project is inspired by flight. We are using some fantastic poems about the flights of birds and flight in dreams.

'With the composers we have got involved, it enables us to make some beautiful, uplifting music in the acoustic of the cathedral.

'We are looking for a choir of people who want to sing. They do not need to have previous experience because we teach everything by ear and you do not need to read music.'

Everyone, from aged 18 to 80 and with or without singing experience, is welcome to join the choir.

There are no auditions and people can find out more at a no-commitment taster evening on Tuesday, February 19.

Last year's Voice Project commission for the Norfolk and Norwich Festival - Singing The City - was shortlisted in the EDP People's Choice category of the Norfolk Arts Awards.

• The taster evening - which costs £5 per person - is on Tuesday, February 19 at 7.30pm at The Friends Meeting House, Upper Goat Lane, Norwich, NR2 1EW.

Prospective singers can just turn up on the night or get further information from www.voiceproject.co.uk or info@voiceproject.co.uk.

After the taster, rehearsals will take place each Tuesday up to the concert in May.
