Train passengers are facing severe disruption and cancellations after damage to overhead electric wires.
Services from Norwich to London Liverpool Street, were cancelled this morning after the fault between Colchester and Marks Tey.
A Greater Anglia spokesman said Network Rail engineers were fixing the problem.
Hourly services between Norwich and Ipswich and Ipswich and London Liverpool Street are now taking place, which is less frequent than Greater Anglia's normal service.
A message on the train company's website advised passengers to avoid travelling on the line because of the damage.
It said: "Due to damage to the overhead electric wires between Colchester and Marks Tey fewer trains are able to run.
"Train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.
"Due to the overhead wires being damaged between Colchester and Marks Tey fewer trains are able to run. Customers are advised NOT to travel between in/out of Liverpool Street via Colchester because we are running a special service which is very limited. Until we have the full infrastructure back, we are unable to run a full service."
