Scarecrows of all shapes and sizes on display at festival at Wood Norton, near Fakenham

It's not every day you see Marilyn Monroe, James Bond's country cousin and an Olympic diver all together in a quiet Norfolk village.

Well, they were among the variety of characters who are appearing up in Wood Norton, near Fakenham, this weekend as the community stages its fourth scarecrow festival.

Round every corner there is another surprise for people from across the county who visited the village.

A clown (who was very life-like), the Queen, a Lego man and a horse racing jockey are among the other 50 or so creations dreamt up by local people.

BBC radio and TV presenter David Whiteley performed the opening of the festival, which is taking place around the village and also includes tractor and trailer rides, a treasure hunt, a mini railway, stalls and games. plus an open air concert by local band Talisman.

Woodforde's Norfolk Ales is sponsoring the festival and brewed a special bitter for the weekend called Mawkin (which is the Norfolk for scarecrow.

The festival - staged every two years - is put together by a committee of villagers and among them is Linda Jennings who said: 'We used to have a fete and wanted to do something different and staged a scarecrow festival and it took off from there. We only have about 200 people in the village so it is quite small but it is a real community effort to put this on.'
