The main shopping street at Cromer was blocked today by scaffolding which toppled over after being clipped by a passing lorry.

The metal poles, which only went up two days ago to repair a first floor bay window at the Albion pub, smashed through a plate glass window in Bennett's electrical shop opposite.

But luckily no-one was standing on the pavement when the accident happened at 10.40am.

A van driver, who used his vehicle to block the street before the emergency services arrived, said an articulated lorry hit the scaffolding with the rear of its trailer.

“He was only moving slowly, and he probably did not realise, but it toppled over narrowly missing some people,” said the driver, who did not want to be named.

Albion landlady Anne Harding said the pub, in one of the narrowest parts of Church Street, was regularly clipped by lorries.
